if there is a choice (see Duden) between a general german word and a local one, I would prefere the general (e.g. "Januar" instead of "Jänner".

Okay this is your personal opinion, but I think the majority would like to have these distinct words, which is the reason behind using a de-CH/AT language file instead of the de-DE language file I suppose.

Good news. This is kind of what I had in mind. So what about creating them?

Keeping separate 'language override files' as Hekla suggested is less favourable for me, because it's a separate pack, a separate install procedure and separate support.

I also think the only way to go is a "normal" language pack.

We had this discussion before in the Developers forum. We then decided to leave it like it is, but I don't mind creating a new pack / packs.

Just let me know what the verdict is...

There are two different parts:
(a) Do we need dedicated translations for Swiss, Austria etc.?
(b) Users have a problem if they use a German language pack other than de-DE on Joomla.

For me (a) is more a philosophical discussion with low priority but (b) is a real problem we need a solution for. Currently we talk about German languages but that's a general problem, e.g. en-*, fr-*, ...

I'll play around to better understand the mechanisms and hopefully see a solution...

Personally, my focus is on part b) and I think this can only be solved by a dedicated language pack as this is a Joomla core behavior. I can't really decide on a) because I don't have any experience with it.

We would need some admins from AT or CH to share their experiences how they handle this topic. Apparently, there are some who use them.

is there a kind of fallback? I think not all my extensions have de-CH translations. So what, when I set de-CH in Joomla?
