[Solved] How to update from 2.1.6

Hi guys,
I was just asked by a charity, if I could have a look at their backend because their calendar module is showing this error when adding a new event:

Warning: count(): Parameter must be an array or an object that implements Countable in /kunden/xxxxx/rp-hosting/xxxxx/components/com_jem/classes/categories.class.php on line 685

Since I am more a Wordpress admin I was just checking basics.
I found out that the installed version of JEM is 2.1.6 which is very outdated.

Maybe the error is fixed when updating?
But what is the best way? I have already done a backup of the installation first.
Joomla version is 3.9.8

Are there any "how tos"?

Hi,. welcome on this forum, where users try to help other users. As more infos you can give,. as more we can help. e.g.template...good would be the url of your template, for to have a look.
the actual joomla version is 3.9.28. Between 3.9.8 and the actual version are a lot of security updates! please make bacckups and update. The actual JEM is 2.3.1. Meanwhile there is a resonsive template the default. Perhaps you should try with the legacy table template.

Maybe you should update quite more than JEM.
The current version of Joomla! is 3.9.28, while your system is on 3.9.8, so you missed a bunch of security updates.
Please check also the versions of PHP and the database.

Thanks for welcoming here. I am trying to give the best infomation as possible. It´s just not my system so please have that in mind when I probably asking weird questions

I just updated the system to 3.9.28

How do I find the URL for the template?
The general template for that website seems to be a custom one. or is there a template for JEM itself? :S

thanks for getting back.
I just updated Joomla to 3.9.28

PHP is: 7.3.23 (can´t choose higher one)
DB is: 5.6.19

Yes, the responsive template is part of JEM 2.3.1, you do not need to install an additional template.
