I can guess the reason for the error message only.
Maybe an update of the PHP version? It looks like an incompatibility.

Wolfgang, I cloned the installation as you recommended and then tried both ways of installing JEM.
Getting this error:
Database driver 'pdomysql' is not supported. Please use MySQL instead.
Well database is mysql, so I am confused again.
Installed Akeeba backup extension and that worked fine.

MySQL has two different interfaces: MySQLi and pdomysql.
JEM does not support pdomysql currently. (It is nearer the farer end of the todo list.)
You can set the interface in the Joomla! configuration of your site:
System > Global Configuration - and there the tab "Server"
Look at Database Settings > Database Type dropdown

Hi Wolfgang,
I went thorugh cloning again and choose the mysqlli what fixed the problem.
Then installed with your 1st suggestion and it went through. Also the error went away.
Did it on the live site too and it seems to work.
