Remove "Kingdom of" and "Republic of" from country list

Hello,

Is there a way to get rid of "Kingdom of" and "Republic of" etc... from the country lists and just list country names?
We've already edited countries.php in \com_jem\helpers. but this didn't change a thing.

Your advice will kindly be appreciated.

Hi, did you a refresh after changing. is it possible to make a language override?
EDIT:
I changed in countries.php Switzerland to Schweiz and did succeed. So others should work too.
I don't know how official this names are?

I did clear joomla caching and cleared my browsers (chrome, firefox).
Just did it again, but no change...

very weird because I'm pretty sure it is the countries.php that has to be edited.

please take a look on #__jem_countries table in DB.
I don't know the history but somehow we have a table and a php file with country names - and both are used.
