it's quite new for me and I am not a developer, but is it possible to create an app for JEM?

A Joomla CMS installation contains what is basically the Joomla framework (platform): Platform . This is the PHP framework in which the Joomla CMS is created as an application (see also) Joomla Framework . You can create a new application by simply installing the framework and writing a new PHP application. An installation of the Joomla CMS contains this framework so it is also possible to create an entirely new application bypassing the Joomla CMS: Create application using Joomla
JEM is a Joomla component (add-on). It runs inside the Joomla CMS application. It may be extended in various ways as I am sure others here can tell you by either adding to the existing code or creating a new component that extends JEM.
As always the actual requirement will determine the path to follow.

Hi Jojo,

I wonder what you mean.

Reading the subject I thought you want a smartphone app showing our events in a nice layout.
But the article you refered describes how to write your own CMS running on a webserver without all the Joomla stuff like articles, user management etc.

Because JEM is a Joomla CMS extension it uses parts of Joomla CMS, not only the platform. Let's thinking about platform like MS DOS and Joomla CMS like Windows 3. Then JEM is a Windows application, not a DOS application. So using it on plain DOS would require to write something providing all the functionality normally used from Windows.
Generally it's possible (because it was possible to develop Joomla CMS) but not sure why one should do that?

I think I misunderstood your question. OK a smartphone app for JEM is a good idea. To do that JEM would need create a web service API and then apps would need to be created for Android, IPhone etc There is work in progress to add web services to JOOMLA 3.6: Joomla Web Services . If/when this happens the next step is pretty straightforward.

Hi Peter,

don't know if we understood or misunderstood Jojo - I'm sure he will find the time to illuminate us. :woohoo:

But many thanks for all your info. We fight to eliminate/adapt the last pieces of code written for J! 1.5 and you talk about J! 3.6!

when I red the article I linked in the first post to this topic,
I thought, it would be possible to create a standalone app for smartphones, to get infos about the coming events.
I thought, you have not to load the whole cms with the joomla platform. So it should be possible to combine cli commands with a web surface.

But because my english is not so good, my developing too, I perhaps dreamed an idea which is not yet ready for reality.
