at first many thanks for your praise, we try our best.
Also I fully agree you, we should provide an alternative. I don't know how much work it is and when we could do it but we should, I think.
btw: Joomla! 3.3 has something related to OSM (/libraries/joomla/openstreetmap/) - maybe it can help us...
